Law of Generosity

Most of us believe that it is good to be generous to a certain extent. But to be overly generous might mean we won't have enough for ourselves. Yet evidence shows that people who give without measure actually receive much more.

It depends on if you have a "scarcity mentality" or an "abundance mentality."  Those who have a scarcity mentality believe everything is limited. They are afraid they will not have enough so they hold back from giving. Actually they end up getting the opposite of what they want in life.

On the other hand, those who have an abundance mentality can't wait to give and make others happy. They thrive on being generous and in return, God blesses them with more so they can keep on giving.

In the book of Proverbs, we read, "One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed."

What kind of mentality do you have?  Maybe you don't have much to give. Jesus praised the poor widow in the gospel who gave the equivalent of two cents because it was all she had to live on. She  is remembered over all the others who gave of their surplus.
 
Give, and it will be given to you. Your gift will return to you in full -- pressed down, shaken together, and running over...the amount you give will determine the amount you get back. -Luke 6:38

 This is true not just for money, but give abundantly of your time, your wisdom, your talents. Care for someone, listen to a friend, pray for someone, share some food, shovel a neighbor's driveway. There is always someone in need. And ironically, instead of having less, you will have a lot more.

    “Wonderfully Made” When I took a college English course, our first assignment was to write an essay about whether we would rather lose our sight or lose our legs.   Overcoming Discouragement Sometimes discouragement and failure take over our lives, and we cannot seem to crawl out of our hole. Even if in reality they are not a true picture, we can be blinded by the seeming darkness.  It often takes another person to uncover what is hidden from us and to see through the cloudy picture.  I am reminded of a story about Bill Wilson, the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous. He tells of how he felt his dream of starting a group for people with drinking problems was not going anywhere. Then unexpectedly Father Dowling, a disheveled priest, came to his door in the middle of a snowstorm. Bill’s caretaker told him that a “damn bum” was at the door.   Shaper of our Journey While we are living our lives, we make decisions, have jobs, make friends, travel, and do all sorts of activities, and think we are directing our lives. We don’t realize how God is shaping us until we look back. “God shapes us on our journey,” Daniel Horan once said. God uses all we do to make us into the persons we are. He puts us in the family we have, with all its problems and shortcomings. Our jobs and college degrees influence our lives. All our decisions and people we have known have made us who we are.
